Reframing luxury:
Why designers are choosing
Wide Planks

Over the past decades, the language of luxury has shifted. Where once it meant shine and excess, today it reflects something quieter, materials with integrity, and spaces that feel honest and more connected with nature.

At Ebony and Co, we believe true luxury begins with scale, simplicity, and a deep respect for nature. That’s why our focus has always been on wide long plank flooring, not as a trend, but as a timeless foundation for thoughtful design.

A tradition revisited

Historically, wide and long planks were considered a mark of quality and prestige. Found in grand European interiors and stately country homes, they reflected a time when floors were crafted from slower-grown trees, with care, scale, and longevity in mind. Their use required skill, time, and high-grade timber making them rare.

As production shifted toward smaller, standardised formats, wide planks became less common. At Ebony and Co, we’ve returned to this tradition. By working directly with trusted forest owners and mills, we’re able to source exceptional logs and craft each plank to order, continuing a legacy where the floor is not just a surface, but a defining element of the space.

Luxury in scale

Wide planks create more than just a surface. They shape the atmosphere of a space. With fewer joints and longer lines, they allow interiors to breathe. The room feels calmer, more open, more grounded. Whether it’s a heritage townhouse or a contemporary villa, the sense of flow wide planks bring is immediate and unmistakable.

Craft meets composition

Every Ebony and Co floor is crafted to order. From the way we select our logs to how each plank is cut, dried, and finished, we treat wood as a design material, not just a product. Designers come to us not only for the aesthetic, but for the flexibility. With the right construction and grade, our wide planks can adapt to a range of spaces and conditions, including underfloor heating, renovations, or more compact interiors.

Not just for big spaces

A common misconception is that wide planks are only suited for large-scale homes. But when proportion is used intentionally, they can transform smaller spaces too. By reducing visual noise and increasing the sense of continuity, wide planks often expand a room’s feel. Combined with the right tone and texture, they become an essential element in creating a balanced environment.

A floor that grows with the space

Our floors are built to last and designed to evolve. Natural finishes like oil or wax allow the wood to age beautifully over time, developing a patina that reflects light, use, and life itself. It’s this kind of subtle transformation that gives a space its soul, something that cannot be replicated or fast-tracked.

Why designers return to Wide Planks

Whether they’re working on coastal retreats, alpine chalets, or inner-city apartments, designers return to our wide planks for one simple reason: they offer quiet clarity. They don’t overpower, they don’t dictate, they elevate. And with all that, they are timeless.

At Ebony and Co, we don’t see wide planks as a product category.
We see them as a philosophy, a way of creating spaces that feel connected with nature again in a world where more and more becomes artificial.
