The intrinsic value of Alternative Hardwoods

As the season turns and designers prepare for autumn projects, material choices naturally come into focus. While oak and walnut remain timeless options, there is a quiet shift underway, a growing appreciation for hardwoods that feel softer, lighter, and more nuanced.
At Ebony and Co, we’ve curated a selection of alternative hardwoods that offer just that: a more subtle presence. These lesser-known species are full of character, ideal for interiors that call for calm, light, and intention. This is not about stepping away from tradition but about widening the creative lens.

Why alternative hardwoods?

Alternative hardwoods offer a different design language. They are often lighter in colour, calmer in grain, and more responsive to tone and finish, which are qualities that resonate with designers seeking purity and restraint.

Continental Poplar, Megève Natural Velvet Poly, wide planks in widths of 18-35 cm, and lengths of 150-350 cm.
Maple Clear Grade, Faded White Velvet Poly, planks in random widths of 22-28 cm and lengths of 120-350 cm.
Many are locally sourced and fast-growing, which adds an element of thoughtfulness and reduced impact to the selection process. More than a trend, they represent a shift in values: toward longevity, natural imperfection, and elegance of wood that doesn’t ask to be the centre of attention, but still defines the space.
All our alternative species are available in wide long planks and can be finished to suit the mood and palette of each project.
Our Selection
Choosing the right wood goes beyond appearance. It’s about how a material feels in a space, how it ages, and how it supports the overall design. These alternative hardwoods offer a more subtle expression, lighter tones, softer grains, and a different kind of warmth.
They’re not chosen to stand out, but to support thoughtful, well-balanced interiors. Each one is selected for its character and crafted with the same care and attention as our more traditional species.
